"I have used three grinders in the past 5 years, one blade and two wheel burr grinders, all broke or were dusty and noisy. This is the first conical wheel grinder I have owned and I cannot compare it to its comparable competitor, the Capresso, and I have only used it a dozen times or so, However, I am impressed by its quality, it is beautifully made and the huge reduction in noise was most welcome. The big plus...I set the timer, press start and walk away, no holding lids down, no coffee flying around etc. Just for the reduction in noise, its quality and the fire and forget operation makes it a 5. It grinds coffee very consistently and the grind is adjusted easily. Is it perfect? No. Two items I noticed. It has a 30 second timer...I need more time so I set it for 20 seconds and do two grinds...not an issue but for me, but wanted to tell you. Second, the ground coffee compartment is shaped in a manner that has insets so its not as easy to clean out and I have to empty the coffee carefully. Still I recommend this and am impressed. It is quality!I will provide a six month review to see if this maintains its operation.

After six months my initial views remain the same, a very fine grinder!"

Customer Review #2
"I have been grinding my own coffee for several years, and have used 3 different grinders. A blade grinder and 2 wheel burr grinders. I had been unsatisfied with my latest one, a Braun KMM30, but soldiered on with it since it did a respectable job, despite the high noise level, static cling and clump of coffee that I would always have to scrape off the side of the container. And it was messy, I'd have to wipe up grounds that sprang to freedom because of the static cling.

After about 5 years, I began noticing improved designs and upon deciding to upgrade, made the following my priorities: Noise level, static cling, and quality of grind. I also didn't want to pay a ransom. That eliminated most under $80 or so. I also wanted a better designed burr system because my Braun would shoot the grounds with messy results.

After reading up and realizing what I probably wanted was over $200, I found this Breville model. Going through a bunch of reviews on the net persuaded me to give it a chance and here's what I've found.

The instructions recommend first removing the hopper and upper conical burr to wipe off any oil which is used to keep them in pristine condition until first use. Then you do a fine grind to get rid of any residual oil(don't use this grind, throw it out). In examining the burr design, it's a conical burr, which allows it to grind at a much slower rate thus not heating up the beans as it grinds, a big plus. Wheel burrs tend to operate at a higher rpm, which is what my Braun did.

It's easy to operate, you pop the hopper lid off and fill with beans, replacing the lid. Then, select the grind you want. I did a few seconds of different grinds to get an idea of what I wanted. To operate, you set the timer knob, then press the start button. The knob does not wind down, but an internal timer turns the machine on for the required time(really cool!). Then remove the container holding your freshly ground coffee and you will notice the lack of static or clumping whatsoever.

Pros: It is considerably quieter than my Braun. Certainly not silent, but a big improvement. The grind is consistent. There is no static nor clumping. The container is a little oddly shaped, but it's quite easy to empty without the static. In addition, the grinder does not spray the grind into the container, it just drops in, which keeps it easy to work with. Finally, it grinds faster. Almost half the time of my old Braun to get the same amount.

Cons: The grind container seems a little flimsy. I would have preferred glass, but then I'd be paying much more. Some might need more than 30 seconds which is the max on the timer.

All in all, I am very happy with this grinder. It's well designed, it looks great and the coffee tastes excellent!"

"This product does an excellent job at grinding coffee beans, however, like other reviewers have said, the grind holder/hopper is cheaply made and the grinds fly all over the place when the hopper is removed and emptied...sort of like static electricity. As such, I have to empty the hopper over the sink, and even then grinds are everywhere and stick to the top of the hopper. A very messy product. Afterwards, I have to wipe down the counter top and sweep up the floor. I like the fact that you can select the grind...but with the mess afterwards, it simply is not worth the $100+ price."

Customer Review #4
"Have had this conical grinder about a month, use 2-3 times daily, and really can't remember the last time I have been as happy with a small kitchen appliance. This grinder produces an extremely consitant grind, is easy to adjust grind, very quiet, and easy to clean with it's removable top burr. I have had virtually no static or counter mess unlike my prior Krups and Starbucks models (the Krups lasted less than a day before return, what a dissapointment). The Breville model is good looking, and it appears and feels to be high quality throughout. As for some previous reviewers concerns about "thin plastic", I don't get it. Unless you are extremely rough on things I don't see the plastic parts as an issue. If I had one complaint (very minor) it is that I have to grind twice (20 sec which is the max, plus 12 more seconds to get the proper amount of grinds for my 12 cup drip maker. Highly reccomended and a bargain price for a upper level quality home conical grinder."

Customer Review #5
"I had used a Starbucks grinder for about ten years before it gave out. I researched grinders prior to purchasing and learned there are alot of problems depending on the brand. I decided on the Breville Conical Grinder because of the good reviews. The unit is attractive and does grind quietly. It is also easy to clean. The downsides are minor but good to know: I found it to still have some static but not bad, the ground coffee chamber is small and shaped awkwardly so scooping out grounds isn't as easy as it could be. I am very pleased with the grind. I like it fine because I filter drip my coffee by the single cup. Great choice for this type of usage."
